When Gluten Free May Not Be Healthy
Some feel gluten free diets may be doing
more harm than good. Gluten free is the
number one googled diet. Trendy it is for
sure.
If you have Celiac disease, eating gluten
free will save your life. If you are other
wise healthy, there is no evidence that eating
gluten free is good for you.
Many feel it is unhealthy in many ways. On
a gluten free diet you need to avoid wheat, rye,
and barley. Gluten free grains are not fortified
with folic acid, B vitamins and iron. This
leads to many people with Celiac disease to
have vitamin deficiencies. Many on a gluten
free diet do not eat whole grains.
Current research shows many people on a gluten
free diet have increased levels of heavy metals,
possibly due to increase in rice.
Regardless, if following a gluten free diet, one
must be under the care of a doctor and experienced
dietitian. The diet needs to be well balanced and
healthy.
