There are nutritional deficiencies seen in people with Celiac. This is caused by the damaged small intestines inability to properly absorb enough nutrients the body needs. Newly diagnosed people with Celiac disease are commonly deficient in iron, fiber, calcium, zinc, vitamin D, magnesium, folate, vitamin B12, as well as protein. Also common is a delay in puberty due to low amounts of vitamin B, folate, and iron.
Once a strict gluten free diet is followed, the small intestines recover and are able to properly absorb nutrients again. Blood work should be done to assess the need to continue vitamin supplementation. For some its beneficial to just continue with them.
Many gluten free products are not enriched and have lower amounts of folate, iron, niacin, fiber, and thiamine. The diet also tends to be higher in fat and less in carbohydrates. Therefore, following a strict gluten free diet while maintaining good nutrition can be challenging.
Vitamins can be used to help with any deficiency. Just learn to check every label including vitamins and make sure all are gluten free.
Knowing the impact of nutrition and vitamins in the Celiac person, a proper healthy diet is a must. Meeting and talking to a Registered Dietitian can be most helpful to assess needs.
Instead of taking the supplements for vitamins and other nutrients I suggest making a Green drink at home as it is more beneficial than any kind of supplements. This drink is a natural resource of these minerals.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that eating healthy is better than taking any supplement, in the case of Celiac, deficienies are usually seen right away in blood work. To get them to normal I agree with supplementation, and yes a Green drink would only benefit. Once stable the greens can work for some, if consistent with drinking it.
DeleteFor this reason, through a tough gluten zero cost eating routine despite the fact that protecting superior diet regime are usually hard.
