Celiac Disease Linked To Coronary ArteryDisease

In comparison to the general population, people with Celiac disease were almost twice as likely to have CAD, according to a study presented by the American College of Cardiology.

Celiac disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the digestive system that can damage the small intestine.  It was also linked to a greater risk of stroke.

The study links people with Celiac were at risk for CAD even without the traditional risk factors.
People with Celiac have persistent inflammation that can spill immune mediators into the bloodstream.  This can accelerate the process of atherosclerosis, and turn into CAD.

Celiac disease is on the rise, affecting 1 in 133 Americans.  Many go undiagnosed  or wrongly diagnosed.  It has been linked to arrhythmias and possible heart failure, so many think it is also associated with CAD.

So if you have Celiac disease you need to work closely with your doctors, and be on the look out for any signs of cardiac disease.celiac.org
