There may be a link between processed foods and the increase incidence of autoimmune diseases, a new study says.
It is a fact that autoimmune diseases, are on the rise. These diseases include Celiac, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and autoimmune hepatitis, and Crohn's disease. A research team from Israel and Germany say they have found evidence that the chemicals and additives found in processed foods may be playing a role.
Many autoimmune diseases stem from damage to the functioning of the tight junctions that protect the intestinal mucosa. These junctions serve as a barrier against bacteria, toxins and allergens protecting the immune system. Damage to these junctions leads to autoimmune diseases.
Processed foods, which are packaged in bags, cans, and boxes contain chemicals and preservatives. People are now consuming these in large amounts. Researchers have shown that processed foods contain at least seven food additives that can weaken those junctions, again leading to autoimmune disease. The hope is that this study makes the food regulators take a closer look at additives. They advise anyone with a genetic link to any autoimmune disease to look closer at there diet and consider avoiding processed foods when possible.www.newsmax.com
