I have touched on this subject before, for Celiac people this is important and often overlooked. It is something many people don't know or think about, when it comes to gluten free. It is also one of the main reasons people still feel sick within the first few months of adhering to a strict gluten free diet.
When you have Celiac disease you think about cross contamination all the time, people often don't realize how this can make you feel sick. Long gone are the days of just running into a store for a snack. Life is about preparing and always carrying a safe food in case you feel hungry.
Some high cross contamination foods are as follows- Cream Cheese and spreads- The person eating gluten uses a knife and dips the knife back in with crumbs.. now you see how it can happen. This can happen with any type of spread.
You need to also think about, sharing toasters with crumbs, utensils, pots and pans, even the cutting board can be a problem.
In restaurant kitchens, you need to ask for gluten free pasta, and hope they use a gluten free pot and strainer.
Do they fry breaded chicken with the fries.
Where are they preparing the food, are their crumbs.
In pizza places, are they making the pizza next to flour, are they using the same pan?
This is just a few, but as you can see their are many areas that have to be thought of, for the safety of the Celiac person. It is up to you to be the vigilant one always looking out for yourself because most are completely unaware or believe a few crumbs will not hurt. It is you living with this disease, so always do your research and ask questions.
