Unlikely Sources Of Gluten

Gluten hides in many different places, here are some very unlikely suspects.  I will list a few and you may be surprised.

1.  Medication and supplements- Gluten may be used to bind pills together.  So when looking for vitamins and medications, check and make sure they are gluten free.

2. Meat and Chicken- When buying look for soy sauce and hydrolyzed wheat in flavored, seasoned or marinated meats and poultry.  Processed lunch meats and deli meats may also contain gluten.

3. Fries and Chips- Corn and potatoes are gluten free, but seasoning may contain malt vinegar and wheat starch.  Fries also may be fried in the same oil used by breaded items.  Most restaurants do not have separate frying areas, so check first.

4. Oats-  We know oats are gluten free, but are grown next to wheat and are at high risk for cross contamination.  Please ask your doctor first, or look for gluten free oats.

5. Meat substitutes- Watch for gluten in veggie burgers, bacon, sausage and imitation seafood.

6. Beverages- Gluten can be found in flavored coffees and teas.  It is also in beer, ale and malt beverages, unless stated gluten free.

These are just some sneaky places gluten can be found, so do your homework and read every label before eating.
