The nut of the day is the pistachio nut, my favorite of all nuts. The pistachio, a member of the cashew family, is a small tree originating from Central Asia and the Middle East. The tree produces seeds that are widely consumed as food. The delicious pistachio nut has long been the symbol of wellness. The kernels are enriched with many healthy benefiting nutrients for optimum health.
The pistachio are actually kernels obtained from fruits belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, in the genus: Pistacia.
Here are just some of the health benefits of this delicious nut.
1. They offer a good source of protein, fats, and minerals. One cup is about 690 calories with 25 grams of protein and 13 grams of fiber. They are also gluten free.
2. They contain many anti oxidant phyto-chemical substances such as carotenes, vitamin E, and polyphenolic antioxidant compounds. Studies suggest that these compounds may help remove toxic free radicals from the body and protect it from diseases, cancers, and infections.
3. They contain about 23 grams per 100 grams of vitamin E. Vitamin E is a powerful lipid soluble antioxidant needed for the integrity of cell membranes of mucosa and skin.
4. They also contain minerals such as copper, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium.
Just a handful a day of these yummy nuts provides enough recommended levels of phenolic anti oxidants, mineral, vitamins, and protein. They are available all year round, in the shell or out of the shell. So grab yourself a handful today.
