Here are some Celiac myths debunked.
1. I had a blood test and it showed positive for Celiac disease. The blood test is just the first step of a Celiac diagnosis. You must have a biopsy to determine if you do have the disease.
2. Does gluten make you fat? Gluten itself does not make you fat, lifestyle choices do. Wheat itself does not make you gain weight, eating excessive calories do.
3. Will I lose weight on a gluten free diet? No, people think this, however people with Celiac often gain weight when their intestinal tract begins to heal. It is now able to absorb nutrients again.
4. Can I work in a bakery, and not eat anything? Breathing in gluten is similar to ingesting it. Although the flour cannot be absorbed through the skin, it can be breathed in. It is best for someone with Celiac not to work in a bakery unless gluten free.
5. Do I need to use special soap, shampoos and makeup? No, gluten cannot be absorbed through your scalp or skin. It must be ingested, so only gluten free item would be lipstick or lip products.
