Flaxseeds

This week I will blog on nutritional super foods and some great recipes.  Today I will talk about flaxseeds and some of their benefits.  Ground flaxseeds provide added texture and flavor to many foods.  These nutty flavored seeds have fiber, protein, and omega 3s, which help fight inflammation. Just a small amount, about a tablespoon will give you these benefits.  However you need to eat these ground, your body won't digest the whole seeds.

Flaxseed meal can replace flour in many baked goods and can also be sprinkled on oatmeal or cereal in the morning.  One tablespoon of flaxseed provided about 65% of your daily omega 3 fatty acid, and also provide lignans, a phytochemical that has been shown to help lower LDL cholesterol and stabilize blood sugars.  Best stored in freezer where it can be kept for about 3 months.  If not stored properly will go rancid due to high fat content.

So go get some flaxseed, grind it up and add the flaxseed meal to your next recipe.  There are too many benefits not too.
