Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that affects those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. It can occur at any time in life. It affects the small intestine and usually produces stomach pain and digestive discomfort.
As we know, the only treatment is a strict gluten free diet. I will go over some symptoms of the disease, and what to be aware of if you think you or someone you know may have the disease.
1. Diarrhea- People with Celiac disease can suffer from loose stool and diarrhea if a strict gluten free diet is not adhered too. Their stool is watery, smelly and pale in color. Many times, those unaware of their condition get used to passing loose movements and do not realize they have the disease.
2. Bloating- Many people complain of feeling bloated, full and uncomfortable at times. This is a by product of the impaired digestive process which leads to the buildup of gases and fluid in the small intestines. The abdominal pressure may also cause cramps and pain.
3. Gas- About 50% of people with Celiac disease report flatulence when they are diagnosed. When their small intestines are unable to digest gluten foods, malabsorption occurs leading to gas. This symptom is an easy one to overlook.
4. Acid reflux and heartburn- Not classic symptoms, but many will complain of these symptoms till officially diagnosed and on a gluten free diet.
5. Constipation- Most people with Celiac have loose stool, however 15% complain of constipation. This occurs when the undigested food forms stool in the lower end of the small intestine with little moisture. This then leads to hard stool.
To be continued tomorrow.....
