About 20% of Americans report cutting gluten from their diet. Sales of
gluten free products have increased from 3.8 billion in 2011 to 10.5
billion in 2015. Mixed in this are foods that have a gluten free label,
however never contained gluten. Most stores and supermarkets have
gluten free sections, or labels for gluten free items. When questioned
why gluten free, most stated it seems healthier.
As I have stated before, gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and
barley. These foods are harmful to those with Celiac disease. The
disease affects about 1% of the population. There is also those who
have a wheat allergy, this too is about 1% of the population. Lastly
it affects people with non celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). The last
one is who makes up the population that has cut gluten out of their diet,
and has increased sales in gluten free products.
Many people attempting to follow a gluten free diet are concerned
about NCGS. However there is no test for this, people cut out gluten
to see if they feel better. Fact remains, unless diagnosed there is no
evidence that it is healthy for people to avoid gluten.
