Gluten Intolerance

Gluten intolerance is real, but what else should you look for?  These days, diet fads change as often as your snap chat pictures disappear.  One minute we cut calories, the next minute carbs, and the next minute we are vegans.  However, the biggest change we have seen that has made an impact is gluten.  Its exposure affects those with IBS, Crohns, and Celiac.  While gluten is the culprit on digestive health to some, is it the only thing we should be looking at?

The gluten free frenzy picked up in 2011 and peaked in 2013.  At this point about 1/3rd of adults were trying to eat gluten free.  This forced industries to increase their gluten free products.  This also lead restaurants to offer gluten free menus.  Consumers thinking gluten free is healthy, and to some it is.  However we need to read what else is in the product offered that is gluten free.  If you read some of the other ingredients listed, they include corn syrup, gums, and many other synthetic ingredients.  So why do some feel gluten free is better with those ingredients.

So in reality, gluten free products can still make you gain weight and can still contain synthetic ingredients.  Studies do show that gluten can impact your digestive health, as well as cause bloating, headaches and fatigue.  Everyone is different, listen to your own body and find out what foods work for you.  Read ingredients, try and stay away from processed foods.  If not Celiac gluten may be better then some of the other fillers in foods.
