A recent study found that people with first degree relatives are five times more likely than the national average to be diagnosed. Symptoms of Celiac disease tend to differ by age. Only about 1/3rd of adults are aware of their GI issues, and many others report unexplained joint pain or depression. In children, digestive symptoms are more common, like bloating, and diarrhea.
Due to the many symptoms associated with the disease, about 80% go undiagnosed.
1. Anemia
The lining of the small intestine is responsible for absorbing iron, and can be damaged by Celiac disease. Low amounts of iron in the body can be a sign that the small intestine isn't properly absorbing nutrients.
2. Discolored Teeth
White, yellow, or brown blotches on adult teeth are symptoms of the disease. Tooth discoloration cannot be reversed. Erosion of teeth enamel and calcium deficiency are serious problems for people with Celiac disease.
