As a Registered Dietitian and a mom of a son with Celiac, I want to educate on a healthy gluten free diet.

Tax Deduction For People With Celiac
If you or a dependent has Celiac disease you might be eligible for a tax break. You will need your grocery receipts for this. The government agrees that you can claim the difference in price between gluten food and regular food.
What do you need to do. You first need an official diagnosis of Celiac disease from a doctor that also states you need to follow a gluten free diet for your treatment. As of now this is only for people with Celiac disease, not gluten intolerance.
The amount of allowable medical expenses you must exceed before you can claim a deduction is 10% of your adjusted gross income. You need to keep your receipts and calculate the difference between the cost of a gluten free item, verus not gluten free. An example would be gluten free bread $5.19 and non gluten free $2.00. The difference is $3.19. For any food such as flour you will get full price, as they are purchased to meet your dietary need.
You then will need to fill out a 1040 form. You will need your receipts, so save them. For more information log onto www.beyondceliac.org.
