As a Registered Dietitian and a mom of a son with Celiac, I want to educate on a healthy gluten free diet.

Wheat grass Is It Gluten Free?
Wheat grass is a plant that has become a popular
health supplement and food. The young shoots
of the wheat plant are the grass. Several studies
have focused on the health benefits, which
include anti cancer potential, reduction in
oxidative stress, helping rheumatoid arthritis,
healing colitis and other advantages.
So is it gluten free, the answer is a bit complicated.
Gluten is a protein that is found in seeds, so it should
not be present in the stems or leaves of a plant.
Wheat grass that does not include the seeds is gluten
free, but it is hard to avoid cross contamination.
The risk of cross contamination is high when
harvested and processed.
Some health experts suggest avoiding all wheat grass
products if you have celiac disease. Unless you can
verify from the company that they are using pure
clean wheat grass, do not eat it.
You may not want to risk eating wheat grass
or products if you have celiac disease. However
there is alternative, like dark green leafy vegetables,
like spinach and kale, and they should give you the
same benefits.
