What Should You Know About Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune
disease that affects the small intestine.
The disease occurs as a result of an
immune reaction to gluten.  Gluten is
the component of protein in foods.
Gluten is found in wheat, rye, and
barley.

When a person with Celiac ingests
gluten, the immune system attacks
the gluten and damages the villi of
the small intestine.  The damaged
villi can lead to malabsorption and
vitamin deficiencies.

Diagnosis of Celiac disease is usually
made by performing tests via  blood,
and an endoscopy.  The only treatment
is a strict gluten free diet.
