As a Registered Dietitian and a mom of a son with Celiac, I want to educate on a healthy gluten free diet.

Eating Out Safely
Eating out with Celiac can be a challenge to say
the least. Always look at the menu ahead of time,
read reviews and call ahead if needed.
Here are a few tips to eat out safely.
1. Always look at how food is prepared. Check to see if
they season it, before grilling or baking. Check to see if
they use separate fryers for fries. Many places now
offer gluten free, however they sometimes do not
understand cross contamination.
2. Do not be afraid to send food back. Once we were
at a steak house. We ordered a steak and told them
no marinade, needs to be plain and gluten free. When
it came out it was in a sauce, they weren't sure if it was
gluten free, we sent it back. When it came out again,
no joke, it had a large onion ring on it, again sent it back.
Finally on the third try they got it right. So yes
no chances should be taken, explain and send it back.
It is not worth getting sick over.
3. You can always ask to speak to the head chef or
manger, this is important if you feel the waiter does
not understand you.
